On October
the 5th six families were exterminated (including 14 women and 6
children) The men which found shelter in the cellar “ Cŕ Beguzzi”, were forced
by the SS to clean up and to help installing the machine guns. After finishing
this work, they were forced to walk along a small path. Alongside this path,
there was a 30m deep abyss. They had to walk there in a line, and one after
another was shot and fell into the abyss. The people which remained, were

From the
street and railtracks the SS climbed up directly to Casaglia. In their panic
women, children and elders looked for protection in the church of Casaglia.
Soon after, the priest Don Ubaldo Marchioni arrived. He gathered the people
around him and prayed with them. All of the sudden the door was banged open.
All of them were forced to get outside. The priest and a paralyzed woman
remained in the church, where they were shot immediately. All of the others had
to go to a cemetery close to the church. Right there the SS put a machine gun
in front of the crowd and slaughtered everyone. Some of them survived because
they were covered by corpses and could witness the crime.

DI SALVARO (LA BOTTE)
On
September the 29th started a raid affecting all the houses, farmers
houses, and hamlets in the region of the 3 adjoining communes Marzabotto,
Grizzana – Morandi and Monzuno.
The men,
which were separated from woman and children, were brought to the stable of
Pioppe on a little square on the opposite side of the church. In the morning of
30th September the SS selected those which were in shape to work and
which not. Those who were perceived as incapable to work, were kept imprisoned
and on the following day, Sunday, 1st October shot at the “Botte” of
Pioppe. All the others were locked in the church and later deported to Germany
in a working camp. “Botte” is the name for a big water filled pothole, which
was used for works at a hemp factory. In those days, this pothole was empty
because the factory has been bombed just before. 45 people fell on the muddy
ground after they were shot. 3 could flee, but died soon after. (Comelli Luigi,
Nannetti Guido and a man from Carviano). 3 people survived. (Ansaloni Aldo, Borgia Pio e Piretti Gioacchino, named Domenico).
As later on the locks
of the pothole opened and water entered in, it flushed all the corpses into the
river “Reno”. Nobody of them has ever been found.
